Does my Range Rover need a software update or is something really broken?
Quote from jowanlee on October 28, 2026, 3:52 amA funny thing has been going on with my car for about a month, and I cannot decide if I should laugh or get worried. I drive a Range Rover Evoque, three years old, and the touch screen has started to do things on its own. Sometimes the map zooms in by itself while I am driving. Sometimes the radio switches to another station right when my favorite song is playing. Last Friday the whole screen went black for ten seconds and then the logo showed up, like the car had just been turned on again. My teenage son thinks it is hilarious and says the car has a ghost inside. I do not find it as funny, because I have a long trip planned next month and I rely on the navigation a lot. My friend who works in an office with computers said I should try a reset by holding the power button on the screen, and I did, but it only helped for one day. Another friend told me that these cars get small software updates, and that most owners never install them because nobody mentions it. That was new to me. When I bought the car, the salesman talked only about the engine and the seats, and never said anything about updates. A few nights ago I was reading some old posts, and one person said a Range Rover Repair garage can check if your car is on the newest software and also look at the battery, because a weak battery can make the screen act crazy. I had never connected the two, and now I keep wondering if that is my problem. Does an update cost money, or is it free in the first years? How long does it take, and will I lose my saved places and phone settings afterward? Also, is it risky to update the software if the battery is not fully healthy? I read that a car can get stuck in the middle of an update, which sounds scary. And if the screen turns out to be faulty, is it very expensive to change? I have heard prices that made my eyes go wide. If any of you had a screen that acted strange like this, please tell me what fixed it. Did it come back later? Easy words are best for me. Thanks a lot for reading, and I hope my son is wrong about the ghost.
