Got some questions about renting a car in New Zealand
Quote from Padre on June 3, 2026, 2:38 pmHey guys, anyone been to New Zealand and rented a car there? Got a work trip coming up and need something to get around between cities. Checked out a couple of the big international chains and yeah, not going there. Reading through all those terms and conditions almost broke me. So many restrictions and fine print that you'd think it was easier to just walk. Any local companies there that keep things a bit more straightforward?

Quote from Uriah on June 3, 2026, 2:51 pmThe thing with these international chains is they always keep offices right at the airport. So when you've just landed and need a car right away you've basically got no choice but to go with them. And obviously nobody's going to sit there reading through that whole wall of fine print. Then people are shocked when a big charge hits their credit card out of nowhere. Local outfits like Ezi Car or Mode Rentals have their own terms too, but way more reasonable.

With private owners you can work out all the terms directly before anything's signed, none of that wall of fine print you get with the big chains. You can rent a car in New Zealand here: https://getrentacar.com/en-US/new-zealand . Pickup and return conditions are laid out clearly on the listing and you can sort out any details with the owner straight through the chat.
