Which Civil War stories set in Memphis and Tennessee have stayed with you?
Quote from highmountain5 on November 4, 2026, 5:09 amHello everyone,
I have been reading more about the Civil War in the western theater lately, and I keep coming back to how much of the story happened along the Mississippi and across Tennessee. Memphis, in particular, changed hands in 1862, and I find it interesting how a river city had to adjust to a new kind of daily life almost overnight.
A few things I would love to hear your thoughts on:
- Which Tennessee battle do you find the most interesting to read about, Shiloh, Stones River, Franklin or another?
- Do you prefer history books or fiction when you want to understand how ordinary families lived through the war?
- Are there any lesser-known people from that era you think deserve more attention?
Recently I came across High Mountain Book, which is the home of Memphis Moon by Matthew M. Watkins, a Civil War historical fiction novel. It made me wonder what other books or sources people here would recommend for Memphis and Tennessee in the 1860s.
